Children, who would have served detention a generation ago, are today arrested if they are disruptive in class. Schools and districts have justified the deliberate focus on punitive discipline sanctions and policing as a means of creating safer school environments. These policies, however, have been counter-productive and are contributing to the “school to prison pipeline.”
