Building off our its uncovering the prison and jail phone and video visitation industries, the Prison Policy Initiative published a report on electronic messaging — which is often referred to as “email for prisoners” — in correctional facilities.

The report, “You’ve Got Mail: The promise of cyber communication in prisons and the need for regulations,” finds that the product available to incarcerated people and their families actually has very little in common with mainstream email.

It report responds to the Federal Communications Commission’s recent request for comment on advanced communication services in prisons and jails, urging the FCC to regulate electronic messaging and prevent subversion of existing regulations of phone calls home.
