This resource provides information on recent United Nations reviews of the United States’ human rights record, with specific attention to key issues relevant to state and local governments, including housing, employment, criminal justice, and the rights of children. Drawing from the recent U.N. human rights instruments it has ratified, as well as the Universal Periodic Review (the UPR), this resource summarizes the human rights standards relevant to each of these areas, along with the specific recommendations for how to bolster compliance with them through law, policy, and practice. It also distills recommendations to the federal government to strengthen the national approach to human rights education and coordination in order to make human rights a reality on the ground.
