Fact Sheet: Private Prison Companies Encourage Mass Incarceration by Owning Facilities
In the Public Interest
Jul 28, 2016

Building on its 2013 report, Criminal, which exposed the now infamous “bed guarantees” in many private prison contracts, In the Public Interest publishes this fact sheet that shows how CCA and GEO Group further encourage America’s overreliance on incarceration by owning facilities.

When private prisons sit empty, they incur operating expenses for the private company that owns the facility without generating revenue. As a result, once a private prison company loses a contract at one of their facilities, they seek out other people to incarcerate by marketing to governmental entities.

It also put together a map showing where CCA and GEO Group actually own facilities.
