POSITION DESCRIPTION

Advancement Project’s national office in Washington, DC seeks an experienced, energetic, and committed professional talent manager to enhance and extend its impact in movement building work by recruiting, training, retaining, supporting, and growing a well-trained, diverse team of enthusiastic employees fully dedicated to achieving a racially just democracy.  This is a newly created position and will report to senior leadership.

Position Focus:

  • Leads efforts to recruit, train, advise, and retain a first-rate, dynamic, diverse team of Advancement Project employees committed and valuable to the Movement for racial justice.
  • Coordinates staff recruitment and talent development, employee engagement, team building and coaching, and mentoring programs.
  • in developing strategies to identify talent inside and outside the organization to meet needs;
  • Coordinates and implements plans to create and maintain a positive work culture in which respectful relationships, ongoing learning, growth, and safe spaces to resolve internal conflicts are expected and maintained;
  • Surveys and meets regularly with the Leadership Team, Change Team, project directors, supervisors, and other staff to determine staffing needs, challenges, advancement opportunities and to address them with specific, timely, reliable responses;
  • Explores and coordinates the use of effective annual review tools and ensures reviews are conducted in fair, consistent, and timely ways;
  • Performs research on competitive compensation packages to ensure benefits match values and performance expectations of the organization; plus recommends and assists in maintaining a salary structure that meets the recruitment and retention needs of the organization based on market reviews involving comparable organizations, consistent with annual budgets;
  • Performs research, recommends, and monitors personnel policy changes, as needed, and coordinates trainings for implementing and enforcing policies in a fair and nondiscriminatory manner;
  • Assists in establishing procedures and timelines for developing effective, accurate, job descriptions, vacancy announcements, job postings, employee classifications, and ensuring interviews proceed fairly and promptly;
  • Maintains positive relationships with external groups and persons within the racial justice movement to ensure Advancement Project recruitment and training activities are relevant to movement needs;
  • Identifies and facilitates staff development initiatives in collaboration with the Leadership Team, Training Team, Operations Manager, and supervisors, including on-boarding, orientation, and the delivery of proactive, creative trainings, and plans to enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of a diverse, Movement-building team;
  • Develops and administers recruitment, training, and retention work plans and budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree (required);
  • 5-7 years’ experience in human resources, talent management, organizational development, or related field;
  • Strong background in and/or commitment to racial justice and social change issues required;
  • Nonprofit advocacy organization experience preferred;
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills;
  • High level of emotional intelligence;
  • Superior written, verbal, interpersonal skills and conflict resolution abilities;
  • Demonstrated  organizational and time management skills, high level of integrity, credibility, and diplomacy;
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies;
  • Results-focused approach and creative problem solving; and
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, and respond to shifting priorities.
  • Proven capacity to work independently with broad -based authority to exercise discretion on behalf of employees.
