Senior Program Officer
Amnesty International USA’s Criminal Justice Program

The Senior Program Officer for Amnesty International USA’s Criminal Justice Program leads the organization’s efforts within the United States to reform the US criminal justice system in line with international human rights law and standards, with a current focus on abolishing the death penalty and stopping killings by police.

The Senior Program Officer will implement a program strategy with stakeholders to make human rights impact and help achieve organizational goals through advocacy, coalition building, supporting grassroots activism, and other effective tactics. The Senior Program Officer will serve as AIUSA’s expert, point-person and public spokesperson on issues covered by the program; create effective grassroots actions and materials to engage the public; influence US government officials and others to help achieve the program’s goals; and oversee the program’s annual work plan and budget.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the program’s strategy with stakeholders to achieve the program’s “SMART” goals and objectives;
  • Ensure that the program’s human rights work also helps achieve the organizational goals and objectives in AIUSA’s Strategic Plan;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in implementing effective tactics—including advocacy, coalition building, and grassroots activism, media advocacy, social media advocacy, and public education—to achieve the program’s goals and objectives;
  • Report on progress toward the program’s goals and objectives;
  • Influence U.S. government officials to achieve the program’s goals and objectives;
  • Participate in coalitions and develop strategic relationships with allies and other organizations;
  • Recruit, train, and sustain AIUSA’s members and the public in effective activism—including lobbying– in support of the program’s goals and objectives by creating useful and compelling actions, training modules, and materials;
  • Serve as AIUSA’s expert, point-person and public spokesperson on the program’s issues;
  • Collaborate with AI’s research and policy staff to develop AI reports on the program’s issues;
  • Engage with AI’s International Secretariat and AI sections around the world to help achieve the program’s goals and objectives, including by serving as AIUSA’s point person for input on program-related issues to the global AI movement;
  • Support fundraising efforts for the program and AIUSA, including working with the Development team to share information and review materials;
  • Develop and oversee the program’s annual work plan and budget
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of the Programs Unit of AIUSA
  • Present a positive image of work group and AIUSA to others
  • Exercise judgment as to choice of work method/procedure and to schedule tasks appropriately to meet guidelines
  • Participate in shared responsibility and collaboration with the volunteer and internal and external constituents

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • BA/BS required
  • At least 5 years of experience, including in the program’s human rights issues and in serving as a public spokesperson on those issues
  • Demonstrated expertise in human rights and the program’s human rights issues required nonprofit experience preferred
  • Experience implementing a strategy to achieve goals and objectives required
  • Experience selecting and implementing effective tactics required

Experience in grassroots activism, lobbying and coalition building required
