Organizational Overview

The Sentencing Project, established in 1986, works for a fair and effective criminal justice system by promoting reforms in sentencing policy, addressing unjust racial disparities, and advocating for alternatives to incarceration. The Sentencing Project engages in research on sentencing and related issues, advocates for criminal justice policy and practice reform, and conducts broad-scale public education through media, online and other communications.

Job Description and Responsibilities

Primary issue areas addressed by The Sentencing Project include sentencing reform, drug policy, racial disparities in the criminal and juvenile justice systems, and felony disenfranchisement. The Program Associate will provide support for a range of the organization’s activities in these areas, including research, advocacy, and communications. Areas of work will include support in research and writing briefing papers, outreach to allied criminal justice reform organizations, assisting in electronic communications networks, and producing information and analysis for use by advocates. The Program Associate will also aid the organization’s communications outreach through producing website and social media content, newsletter and publications layout, and will provide support to the Operations Director for overall office operations.

Qualifications

Desirable skills and experience include the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Two years relevant public interest experience
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Strong technical skills, including website communication, newsletter and publication layout, social media, data visualization, and database management
  • Demonstrated commitment to criminal justice reform and racial justice
  • Demonstrated ability in working for reform, with groups such as grassroots coalitions, civil rights organizations, religious organizations, or student campaigns
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign preferred

 Salary

Commensurate with experience and duties. Current benefits package includes three weeks paid vacation; health, dental, life and disability insurance; contribution to 403(b) retirement plan and Metro transportation subsidy.
