Overview:
#cut50 — an initiative of The Dream Corps — is a national bipartisan effort to smartly and safely reduce America’s incarcerated population by 50 percent over the next 10 years. Through Legislation and Humanization, we aim to build popular support for practical, bipartisan solutions and transformative criminal justice policies.
Key Responsibilities:
#cut50 seeks a Policy Associate with strong written and verbal communication skills to support our bipartisan criminal justice reform efforts. The position will help develop our policy priorities and legislative strategy, build grassroots campaigns, participate in lobbying activities, and support other campaigns and projects as needed.
The Policy Associate will work with #cut50 staff and partners to monitor the development of legislative actions at the state and national levels, with a focus on California and Federal reform. The Policy Associate will support campaign planning efforts, mobilize constituencies, and build coalitions with grassroots and policy experts in local, state and federal jurisdictions nationwide.
Candidates must be strong writers, able to work quickly under tight deadlines. We seek individuals who have been personally impacted by the criminal justice system and are deeply committed to bipartisan reform efforts. We also look for people comfortable working with a small, fast-paced team and able to efficiently handle multiple deadlines.
Campaign Goals:

Change the narrative: leverage the power of media and storytelling to generate empathy for the millions of people impacted by our criminal justice system.

Seize the momentum: Capitalize on bipartisan support by cultivating a coalition of elected officials, public supporters, and advocates across the political spectrum.

Make a case for action: Mobilize a community of supporters to influence elected officials to support transformative criminal justice policy.

Inform the public: Help build better understanding of the issue with mainstream audiences
Candidates should possess:

2-3 years experience leading national, issue-based campaigns

1-2 years experience with media outreach, PR and digital communications

Extremely well organized

Familiarity with criminal justice policies

Team Player; ability to work effectively with diverse grassroots constituencies and policy-makers

Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Strong work ethic and willingness to go the extra mile

Excellent interpersonal skills

This full-time salaried position will be located in our Oakland, CA office – though we are a semi-virtual office and offer some flexibility for telecommuting. The position is a one-year position, potentially renewable. Some travel may be required.
