Policy Analyst, Criminal Justice Reform

The policy analyst for the Criminal Justice Reform team at American Progress works to advance fair, just and proportional, comprehensive, and data- and evidence-driven public safety and criminal justice policies. The policy analyst will develop ideas for new policy prescriptions, conduct original research, write reports and other publications, and assist in the conceptualization and execution of a range of projects. This position requires a proven track record of strong research and writing skills and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to translate research into concrete policies.


  • Research and write, individually or in partnership with others, original publications on criminal justice and public safety issues, including reports, issue briefs, columns, and op-eds.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of laws, regulations, and policy.
  • Communicate effectively with policy stakeholders and policymakers.
  • Assist in the crafting of communication strategies for press and social media.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Develop and/or support advocacy alliances in the assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Perform administrative duties such as assisting in the coordination and planning of meetings, calls, and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Advanced degree in law, social science, economics, or public policy preferred.
  • At least three years of professional experience.
  • Knowledge of policy and politics around criminal justice reform and public safety issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people involved in or affected by the criminal justice system.
  • Legislative, advocacy, or nonprofit experience is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment; under pressure; and meeting multiple, tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and goals.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70.
