The Office is seeking a Chief Counsel.  The Chief Counsel will be responsible for providing legal advice to the State’s Attorney and her Executive Team.

Duties of the Chief Counsel include meeting regularly with the Executive Team and supervisors of the Assistant State’s Attorneys (ASAs);  formulation of policy recommendations to the State’s Attorney;  participation in significant cases with novel issues through brief writing and court appearances;  responding to media MPIA requests;  drafting legislation;  testifying before the legislature with regard to legislation;   updating ASAs on substantial legal developments; participating in the training of ASAs;  providing guidance and advice to ASAs;  providing advice regarding wiretap applications; providing advice regarding the obtaining of electronic and cell phone information;  and keeping current with case law, statutory law, legal principles, and best practices.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and will bring a strong desire to work collaboratively.  The candidate will have a demonstrated ability as a trial lawyer.

The ideal candidate must be highly proficient in the use of Lexis/ Nexis and other computer systems to conduct legal research, conduct internet searches, and to maintain case notes and documents in an electronic form.  The candidate must be familiar with  relevant statutes and case law.   The candidate must have extensive felony trial experience and experience in district court and juvenile practice.

Applicants are required to submit a cover letter, resume, a writing sample which demonstrates substantial legal research and analysis and three professional references.

Felony trial jury trial experience to verdict is required.  Prior homicide trial experience is a plus.

Salary: $82,753 – $132,342 commensurate with experience (plus a comprehensive benefits package).
