JOBS: Arnold Adventures
Arnold Ventures

“Hi everyone.  Please see below from Julie James and Amy Solomon about the many job openings at Arnold Ventures, which is the recently restructured Arnold Foundation.

Dear Colleagues:

I am thrilled to say that Arnold Ventures (!) has just announced a new set of job openings for members of our growing team in the Criminal Justice Initiative. The job descriptions are available here, and below is a summary of the positions we are looking to fill.

The Arnold Ventures Criminal Justice initiative aims to advance community safety and the values of fairness, effectiveness, and racial justice. We fund innovative work in five domains: Policing, Pretrial Justice, Community Supervision, Prisons, and Reintegration. The initiative works with teams of experts from inside and outside government and across disciplines to reform the U.S. criminal justice system through research, evidence, testing innovative pilot programs, and policy change.

We are seeking highly qualified candidates for three positions on the corrections team.

  • The Director of Criminal Justice Research will build our research portfolio in the field of corrections, broadly defined. We are actively exploring an exciting range of topics including fines and fees, community supervision, prison conditions, sentencing, release decision-making, and reentry. For a criminal justice researcher, this is a rare opportunity to work with a talented team to develop a body of evidence about some of the critical issues in the field. This position will report to Amy Solomon, Vice President of Criminal Justice in the Washington, DC office who oversees our portfolio on corrections reform. This individual will work closely with our other two Directors of Criminal Justice Research (Dr. Kristin Bechtel and Dr. Alex Trouteaud), the Criminal Justice leadership team, and leadership across the foundation. The Director will also manage a Manager of Research on the corrections team.
  • The Criminal Justice Manager will help research, analyze, develop, and manage high-impact philanthropic investments with a focus on reforming community supervision, prison policies, sentencing, release decisions, fines and fees, reentry, and reintegration. This individual will manage and track grants approved by the Arnold Ventures Board, including working with grantees and partners to develop strategic plans, establish performance metrics, and monitor progress and impact. The Manager will report to Julie James, Director of Criminal Justice in the Washington, DC office.
  • The Criminal Justice Analyst will help provide research, analytical, and operational support to the corrections team. This individual will work closely with team members on diverse projects and gain practical hands-on experience supporting the development and management of research, policy, and advocacy initiatives and investments. The Analyst will also report to Julie James

We are also seeking high quality candidates for two positions on the pretrial justice team.

  • The Criminal Justice Manager will help research, analyze, develop, and manage high-impact projects with a focus on pretrial justice – particularly the role of prosecutors, defense counsel, and the courts. This individual will manage and track grants approved by the Arnold Ventures Board, including working with grantees and partners to develop strategic plans, establish performance metrics, and monitor progress and impact. The Manager will report to Becky Silber Director of Criminal Justice in the New York office.
  • The Criminal Justice Analyst will help provide research, analytical, and operational support to the pretrial justice team. This individual will work closely with team members on diverse projects and gain practical hands-on experience supporting the development and management of research, policy, and advocacy initiatives and investments. The Analyst will report to Virginia Bersch, Director of Criminal Justice in the New York office.

On our policing team, we are seeking a Criminal Justice Manager of Research who will help research, analyze, develop, and manage high-impact projects with a focus on violence reduction, community safety, alternatives to arrest, and connections to care. This individual will help develop and implement the policing research agenda, manage research grants, and provide strategic research-related advice to the policing team. The Manager will report to Dr. Alex Trouteaud, Director of Criminal Justice Research on the policing team in the Washington, DC office.

We are also hiring for a newly established position, titled Director of Litigation Strategy. This individual will lead the development and execution of a strategy that invests in strategic litigation in pursuit of criminal justice reform. The Director will be responsible for identifying, analyzing, and pursuing new, high-leverage philanthropic opportunities and managing current investments. The Director will report to James Cadogan, Vice President of Criminal Justice, and will work closely with the leadership of the criminal justice team.

In addition, the Communications and Policy & Advocacy teams at Arnold Ventures are hiring for colleagues to support the work of the Criminal Justice Initiative.

  • The Director of Criminal Justice Advocacy will help advance the criminal justice policy priorities of the foundation by developing and executing advocacy campaigns; building, resourcing, and maintaining strategic alliances; and managing relationships with key policymakers. This individual will report to Robb Gray, Vice President of Policy & Advocacy and will work closely with leadership on the criminal justice team.
  • Reporting to Jeff Cohen, the Vice President of Communications in our Houston office, the Communications Manager will build out both short- and long-term communications strategies responsive to the criminal justice team’s goals and in alignment with the foundation’s big picture media strategy. This individual should have a passion for criminal justice reform matched by an ability to tell compelling stories in multimedia-rich formats.

We believe these are exciting opportunities for individuals who are eager to join the talented criminal justice team at Arnold Ventures.  We would be grateful if you could use your networks and your professional contacts to encourage people to submit their applications for these openings.  (Applications are submitted to jobs@arnoldventures.org.) If you have questions, or would like to discuss a particular candidate to determine whether there is a possible fit, please do not hesitate to contact me.
