JustLeadershipUSA 2017 Leading with Conviction Training
JustLeadershipUSA

Mission

JustLeadershipUSA (JLUSA) is dedicated to cutting the US correctional population in half by 2030. JLUSA empowers people most affected by incarceration to drive policy reform.

Leading with Conviction

JLUSA believes that America’s most challenging barrier to expansive, systemic criminal and juvenile justice reform is the absence of clear and consistent leadership by those who have been directly affected by our failed criminal justice policies. Leading with Conviction (LwC) is an advanced leadership training specifically tailored for formerly incarcerated (anyone who has been incarcerated or under supervision in the criminal or juvenile justice systems), mid-senior level leaders with a specific and proven track record in advocacy, activism and community organizing.

LwC is a cohort based, 12-month opportunity for leaders from around the country. LwC takes place both in-person and remotely through four in-person forums, six webinars, executive coaching, peer coaching, and regular digital communication. LwC trainings benefit leaders by introducing them to the people and practices closely linked to successful community and regional criminal justice advocacy efforts, enabling them to take on greater challenges and to generate quantifiable impact in their work. JLUSA Fellows maintain full time jobs while successfully completing the JLUSA LwC training.

Eligibility and Admission Criteria

Application for Leading with Conviction is a competitive process with the final selection at the sole discretion of JustLeadershipUSA. Admission shall include, but not be limited to, the following requirements:

  • Fellows must have at least 3 years post-criminal justice involvement (juvenile and/or criminal justice involvement is required to be eligible and includes but is not limited to: actual incarceration [served time in jail and/or prison], arrest with or without conviction, under community supervision, i.e. parole, sentenced to probation-only, and involvement as a client in the juvenile justice system).
    • We require 3 years post-criminal justice involvement (see above for full description of criminal justice involvement) to ensure leaders have had the time to resolve normal re-entry issues, secure housing and employment and focus on leadership advocacy in their communities. Individuals sentenced to state parole and/or federal probation are eligible for Leading with Conviction.
  • All Fellows MUST have demonstrated a minimum 3 year track record of leadership with a specific commitment to advocacy and community organizing, not only social services.
  • In order to be reimbursed for travel and lodging by JLUSA, all JLUSA Fellows must commit to full participation in all program components (*completing this application indicates that you have checked your calendar and confirmed your availability on all applicable program dates):

    • Fellows must commit to attending from start to finish all in-person forums, webinars, executive coaching sessions, and peer coaching meetings (approximately 10 hours per month total).
    • Prior to admission, leaders must be able to identify and submit a spreadsheet with a minimum of 25 peers, colleagues, supervisors and/or direct reports from their professional networks who are willing and able to complete a pre- and post- 360 Assessment*. (*360 Assessment is a survey that gathers important insight from supervisors, co-workers, direct reports, and others who have direct experience of the individual leader in a leadership role)

LwC Costs

  • Fellows are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from each in-person forum.
  • JustLeadershipUSA provides travel reimbursements of up to $500 for each in-person forum to help offset the costs of air and train fare.
  • JustLeadershipUSA provides mileage reimbursements for leaders living within a manageable driving distance to each in-person forum.
