Through Legislation and Humanization, we aim to build popular support for practical, bipartisan solutions and transformative criminal justice policies.

Key Responsibilities:

#cut50 seeks a motivated, tech-savvy, and organized Program Associate to support our legislation and humanization efforts. Through web content development, social media, media relations, event planning, and other activities the Associate will play a key role in shaping the national narrative about criminal justice reform.

The Communications Associate will help guide and support our communications and digital media strategy, advocacy efforts, media engagement, and web/social/digital campaigns. Working closely with stakeholders including elected officials and their staff, formerly incarcerated individuals and their families, advocates, partners, journalists, media partners, and allied organizations, the Communications Associate will help us mobilize coalitions, communities, and partners.
Candidates must be comfortable working with a small, fast-paced team, able to efficiently handle multiple deadlines, and driven by a deep commitment to social justice and criminal justice reform. Ideal candidates have a personal connection to the criminal justice system, are detail-oriented, enjoy building new relationships, and have a good eye for storytelling.
Campaign Goals:
  • Change the narrative: leverage the power of media and storytelling to generate empathy for the millions of people impacted by our criminal justice system.

  • Seize the momentum: Capitalize on bipartisan support by cultivating a coalition of elected officials, public supporters, and advocates across the political spectrum.

  • Make a case for action: Mobilize a community of supporters to influence elected officials to support transformative criminal justice policy.

  • Inform the public: Help build better understanding of the issue with mainstream audiences

Candidates should possess:
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to go the extra mile

  • Excellent writing and visual storytelling skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Experience or interest in social media and public relations

  • Familiarity with criminal justice policy

  • Ability to work independently, think strategically, and act decisively

  • Background as a successful organizer or campaigner

  • Deep commitment to economic and racial justice

  • Curiosity and an entrepreneurial spirit

  • Team player – flexible and willing to pitch in where needed

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Experience in criminal justice advocacy campaigns

  • A bachelor’s degree

  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations

More about the job:

This full-time salaried position will be located in our Oakland, CA office – though we are a semi-virtual office and offer some flexibility for telecommuting. The position is a one year position, potentially renewable. Some travel may be required.
