The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an opening for an Attorney – Project Manager in the Labor and Employment Law Program (LEL) in the NYC Extension/Outreach Division.
The Project is part of the remedy in the Gonzalez v Pritzker class action case with the Census Bureau. The Project will provide educational information to African-American and Latino individuals who applied for positions with the 2010 Census and were sent a 30-day letter asking them to provide accurate information about their criminal records as a condition of being considered for employment.  Cornell will acquire criminal records of class member respondents and educate them about their records and their legal rights, which may increase their employment opportunities.

The Project’s staff of the Attorney-Project Manager and two Record Assistance Specialists (paralegals) will work directly with class members to provide them with individualized instruction on what their records say, what opportunities for remediation are available to them, what their legal rights in employment are, how to discuss their records with prospective employers, what legal resources are available to them, etc.  Information to be developed will be provided via personal contact (in-person, telephone, Skype, etc.), in writing, and on our website via slides, presentations, videos, etc.

The Attorney is responsible for analyzing the criminal records of class respondents, triaging cases based on complexity, and developing and, with staff, delivering appropriate individualized instruction to each person via in-person, phone, and/or videoconference meetings.  Written materials will be prepared and distributed to each individual in the project.

The Attorney position is a non-tenure track academic term position with a three year initial appointment and reports directly to the Director of the Labor and Employment Law Program, who is an attorney (Project Director).  The university title is Senior Extension Associate.  The position may be reappointed on the basis of recommendations by the Project Director and Associate Dean, as well as available funding and work.

Required Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state or territory.
• Five years of criminal law experience, including experience in reading and analyzing criminal records.
• Demonstrated writing ability (law journal articles, legal briefs, research and project reports, informational brochures, policy briefs, etc.).
• Demonstrated experience in leading teams and mentoring, coaching, and supervising project personnel; five to seven years preferred.
• Exceptional interpersonal communication skills (oral, interpersonal, etc.).
• Five years of experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, including criminal records.
• One to three years of experience in developing and delivering educational programming to diverse audiences through the use of in-person, print, and electronic mediums.
• Familiarity with technical applications such as web-based training, database software, Microsoft Office, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Three to five years of experience with employment rights litigation (Title VII, Fair Credit Reporting Act, state and local human rights laws, etc.).
• Three to five years of demonstrated experience in large project management (e.g., interacting with 500+ program participants, via in-person and videoconference).
• Two to three years of experience with distance learning.
• Fluency in Spanish.
