Associate Executive Director for Strategic Marketing

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is seeking an engaging, positive and strategic thinking marketing leader to oversee its membership and marketing operations as the new Associate Executive Director for Strategic Marketing (AEDSM). This newly created role will provide an exciting opportunity to provide strategic leadership and vision for marketing efforts and activities targeted to various legal audiences, including members, non-members, the criminal defense/criminal justice community, and the public.

Description

As a key member of our Senior Management Team, the AEDSM will oversee the development of interdepartmental initiatives that enhance the visibility and benefits of NACDL, its programs and its products, and will establish and maintain a business plan to effectively increase membership and enhance non-dues revenue streams.

Further, the AEDSM will be responsible for maximizing member recruitment and retention, program attendance, product and exhibitor sales, and related membership benefits through the following functions:

  • Management. Oversee the marketing activities of all non-grant related revenue generating departments (Membership, Programs, Products, Advertising and Exhibitor Sales, and Affinity Programs), including management of budgeting, operational planning, and execution.
  • Strategic Marketing. Develop and implement an integrated strategic marketing plan, including strategic and tactical campaigns, to advance NACDL brand identity, promote membership, increase awareness of membership benefits, programs, products, and services, and build awareness of and recruit sponsors, exhibitors and corporate partners for NACDL programs and live continuing education seminars;
  • Communications Support for all Marketing Initiatives. Author and oversee publication of all content to support marketing activities through all available avenues including print media, website, and social media. Ensure effective, innovative and coherent messaging across all platforms.
  • Relationships. Cultivate and manage relationships with individual lawyers, law firms, corporate sponsors, affinity partners, advertisers, and exhibitors.

Requirements

Qualified candidates for this position will be possess a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, strategic communications, or a related field and at least five years in a senior level marketing position. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Prior experience working at an individual membership association is a definite plus.

Prior candidate experience should include planning and implementing successful membership campaigns that achieved growth targets through the new recruitment and retention of members. Candidates should also have prior experience leading sales and marketing efforts, with demonstrated success in enhancing program attendance and product sales as well as leveraging social media platforms to support marketing strategies. Qualified candidates will have expert-level skill in Microsoft Office, managing website analytics and content management, as well as delivering presentations.

  • A penchant for strategic thinking with a keen understanding of voluntary membership organizations, who can craft and implement an integrated cross-departmental strategic marketing plan.
  • Exemplary written and oral communications skills, with the capacity to produce innovative, articulate and effective marketing materials.
  • A facility to implement marketing campaigns in both traditional media (brochures, flyers, letters) and through the use of cutting-edge contemporary social media platforms.
  • The ability to employ comprehensive analytics in order to accurately monitor and refine marketing strategies on a continuing basis.
  • The ability to work collaboratively across departmental lines, and to engage sensitively with staff members from all departments.
  • An engaging, outgoing personality capable of projecting warmth and enthusiasm for NACDL’s mission.
  • An appreciation of and commitment to protecting the rights of accused persons and promoting social justice in the United States.
