“Mississippians have always been tough on crime, and we can rest assured our law enforcement and judicial officials make every effort to deliver justice and keep citizens safe. By 2012, however, Mississippi faced a corrections and criminal justice crisis of daunting proportions… These findings led to the passage of Mississippi’s comprehensive criminal justice reform bill in 2014, which I co-sponsored. HB 585 has had monumental implications for our state. The reform resulted in greater justice and will yield fiscal savings for the state of $266 million… Thankfully, lawmakers in Washington have taken notice and are working on federal reform legislation — the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act.”
