State Actions in Policing Reform
May 6, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Please join the National Governors Association (NGA), the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) on Thursday, May 6th at 2 p.m. EDT for a briefing on state and territorial actions in policing reform.

In response to public calls for law enforcement reform and in the wake of high-profile officer-involved deaths, states across the country, with the Governor’s leadership, convened statewide discussions and took action to reform law enforcement and policing policies in their states. These actions include executive actions, state task forces and commissions, and legislative action on policing and wider justice system policy and practice.

Legislative interest in policing and police accountability is currently at an unprecedented high. From May 25, 2020 through the end of 2020, 36 states and Washington, D.C. introduced more than 700 bills addressing policing accountability, nearly 100 of which were enacted.

This briefing will provide an overview of gubernatorial and legislative actions taken across the states and territories, as well as highlight efforts in Ohio and Colorado.
