JUSTICE ROUNDTABLE AGENDA

I           Refreshments and Networking, 9:45 am

Moderator – Nkechi Taifa, Esq., Advocacy Director for Criminal Justice, Open        Society Policy Center and Convener, Justice Roundtable Coalition

II         Introductions and Video Short

III        Feature Discussion:  “Past, Present and Future: Advocacy by the Directly Impacted Community”

Kemba Smith –  Often labeled a poster child for helping to reverse a disturbing trend in the rise of lengthy sentences for first time non-violent drug offenses, Kemba became one of the earliest formerly incarcerated persons to be a public spokesperson against mandatory minimum sentences and the war on drugs. In her memoir, Poster Child, Kemba chronicles how she went from college student to drug dealer’s girlfriend to domestic violence victim to federal prisoner. After serving 6 years, her 24 ½ year mandatory minimum sentence was commuted by President Clinton.

DeAnna Hoskins – Having personal experience with incarceration, DeAnna assumed the helm as President of JustLeadership USA on July 15, 2018.  She previously served as Sr. Policy Advisor on Corrections and Reentry for the DOJs Bureau of Justice Assistance and as Deputy Director of the Federal Interagency Reentry Council.  She has been a visionary leader for eliminating our nation’s reliance on incarceration and advancing the rights and leadership of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, working at the local, state and national levels.
