On August 31, 2017, the Florida Supreme Court issued its opinion in the case of Aramis Donell Ayala, etc. v. Rick Scott, Governor (View Decision Here). The question before the court was whether the governor has the authority to cut a local prosecutor’s budget by more than one million dollars and remove over 20 homicide cases from her office, after she indicated she will not pursue the death penalty. On behalf of the Institute for Innovation in Prosecution and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, we invite you to participate in a discussion with Roy L. Austin, Jr., Legal Counsel to Orange-Osceola, Florida State Attorney Aramis Ayala to discuss the Florida Supreme Court’s decision. The aim of this call is for prosecutors to hear directly from Roy Austin about the challenges he faced defending State Attorney Ayala, and to provide an opportunity for prosecutors to discuss any potential implications of the court’s decision on their offices.
