In June 2016, an application for a posthumous (after death) pardon for the early 20th century civil and human rights leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey was filed with the Office of the Pardon Attorney and the Office of the White House Counsel. The filing was submitted by his youngest son, Dr. Julius Garvey, along with Professors Charles Ogletree, Justin Hansford, and the law firm of Akin Gump.The President of the United States has the exclusive power to grant pardons.
