Racism and the Criminalization of Poverty: 21st Century Debtors’ Prisons in the Age of Mass Incarceration
November 11, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm EST

The Sunday afternoon event will kick off with Jeffery Robinson’s discussion on the true history of the economic oppression of African-Americans from slavery to the present as reflected in his dynamic, multi-media exploration, Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America.

The themes of Robinson’s presentation will be further explored by Alec Karakatsanis, Executive Director of Civil Rights Corps, Gina Clayton, Executive Director and Founder of Essie Justice Group, and Johnny Perez, Director of U.S. Prison Programs at National Religious Campaign Against Torture, who overcame three years of solitary confinement at Rikers as they focus on the systemic extortion of money from poor people by imprisonment and the dramatic repercussions for those left at home.

The event is free and open to the public and will be live-streamed through JusticeAid and The Riverside Church media channels.
