“Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has taken a new step that she says will end the controversial practice of Alabama sheriffs personally keeping “excess” state money allocated to feed state inmates in county jails that is not used for that purpose.”
“Beginning Sept. 1, the affidavit that county sheriffs must sign to receive the state funds will include new language. The updated affidavit states that they take an “oath” that the funds will only be spent on “food for prisoners in the county jail” and “preparing food, serving food and other service incident to the feeding of prisoners.” The previous version of the affidavit contained no such language limiting what the state money was to be spent on.”
