WHO/WHAT: Attorney General Karl A. Racine and Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White will co-host a town-hall-style discussion on how to interrupt, stop and prevent violence in the

District of Columbia. Other participants include Deputy Mayor for Public Safety & Justice Kevin Donahue, Metropolitan Police Department Patrol Chief Robert Contee, and violence interruption experts Ivan Cloyd and Dr. Andrae Brown.

BACKGROUND: The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) serves as the District’s chief juvenile prosecutor, and the office also works to protect juveniles involved in the District’s abuse-and-neglect system. Every day, OAG attorneys and staff who work with children see the negative effects of the violence and trauma — including scientifically documented impairment of children’s brain and behavioral development. In May, Attorney General Racine wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post that shined a light on these problems and argued for investing in strategies to fight childhood trauma and improve public safety for all District residents. This town hall is an opportunity to hear District residents’ ideas about how to fight violence in their communities.
