cut50 Communications Volunteer
Reports to: Director of Communications, #cut50
Location: Oakland, CA
Minimum Commitment: 10 hours per week
Internship Description
#cut50 seeks a motivated, tech-saavy, and organized volunteer to support our digital media and communications efforts. Through online advocacy campaigns, web content development, social media management, media relations and event planning, the volunteer will play a supportive role in driving the national conversation for criminal justice reform.
The Communications Volunteer will work under the direction of the Communications Director and coordinate closely with the National Director and #cut50 staff.
The Volunteer should have strong written communication skills, have some media relations experience and be eager to learn new digital skills. A minimum commitment of ten hours per week is requested.
Responsibilities include:
Updating web content through a content management system
Drafting social media content and scheduling through Buffer and Hootsuite
Tracking press hits and supporting list maintenance
Staying abreast of the national conversation on criminal justice reform
Maintaining a media asset database
Researching good models for digital strategy and video storytelling
Developing social kits, press kits, and digital advocacy toolkits
Basic design and video support as needed
Candidates must be comfortable working with a small, fast-paced team, able to efficiently handle multiple deadlines, and driven by a deep commitment to social justice.
Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, enjoy establishing and maintaining systems and relationships, and have an eye for good storytelling.
Candidates should possess:
Excellent writing and visual storytelling skills
Experience interviewing and reporting
Some experience or interest in media relations
Deep commitment to economic and racial justice
Accuracy and credibility
Curiosity and an entrepreneurial spirit
Flexibility and willingness to pitch in wherever needed
