“Though much focus is placed on the legal system, advocates also look to the time after a person has served their sentence. Reentry into society has many components, and President Barack Obama spent the latter part of his presidency focusing on an important one.

“Approximately 600,000 Americans complete prison sentences each year. Many of them will eventually be in search of a job. In November 2015, Obama announced that he would direct federal employers to ‘Ban the Box.’ ‘We can’t dismiss people out of hand simply because of a mistake they made in the past,’ he said.”
