Marshall Project

The Marshall Project seeks a Commentary Editor to conceive, solicit, edit, and publish written and visual commentary on criminal justice issues for www.themarshallproject.org.
The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of working with a diverse group of writers to produce top-quality op-eds. S/he should have a broad range of criminal justice contacts nationally and among diverse points of view and political persuasions, as well as at least five years’ experience writing and editing for major publications.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Staying on top of multiple simultaneous criminal justice conversations to ensure that The Marshall Project is publishing timely and relevant commentary on the signature criminal justice issues of our times; editing and curating the comments on published pieces.
- Maintaining an extensive and diverse range of contacts from whom to solicit commentary, including within academia, activist circles, direct services, and among “influencers” on both sides of the aisle.
- Ensuring that our commentaries are commensurate in quality with the journalism being produced by our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom
- Deploying partnerships with mainstream media and using The Marshall Project’s own website and social media feeds to bring the widest possible audience to our commentaries
- Encouraging a diverse stable of regular contributors who write high-profile, high-impact commentary for us
- Managing a budget to compensate contributors, and contributing to fundraising efforts to replenish and increase it
- Thinking creatively about the op-ed format and how to refresh it
- Developing visual commentary in multiple formats, including video, graphic arts, and other non-written forms
- Evaluating unsolicited op-eds submitted via the website
- Developing a strategy for moderating reader comment and integrating it into the conversation.
The Commentary Editor reports to the President, with editing oversight contributed by The Marshall Project newsroom.
