Unlocking Prisons: A Case Study
October 7, 2016 @ 7:15 am - 8:45 am EDT

Unlocking Prisons: A Case Study will be held at the National Press Club Friday, October 7, 2016 from 11:15 to 12:45.  The United States has just under five percent of the world’s population, but accounts for nearly a quarter of the planet’s population behind bars. Since 1978, the share of Americans in jail or prison has increased more than 400 percent. Supermax prisons, built to hold large numbers of inmates in solitary confinement for months or years, dot the landscape. And yet this world stands apart, a mystery to most citizens. We’ll look at ways that different investigative storytellers have unlocked the doors to take audiences inside lockup. How do these distinct approaches not just reach audiences, but impact them.
