Position Overview:

The Peace Alliance seeks a dynamic Executive Director based in the Washington, DC area.

We are a grassroots educational and advocacy organization focused on transforming how individuals, communities and nations respond to conflict and violence. The prevention and intervention solutions we promote have proven effective in saving lives and dollars while enhancing cooperation skills and increasing social resilience.

We are seeking someone who has a passion for our mission to make the work of peacebuilding a national priority and who is willing to step up in a powerful leadership capacity to help inspire and guide the organization. This person should be organized, creative, dynamic, self-motivated, deeply collaborative and called to the work of ushering in a more peaceful era in the world.

The Executive Director is responsible for all functional areas of operations. This position requires a dynamic leader who can serve as spokesperson for the organization at events, with media, at fundraising events, on the Hill and with the general public.

The successful candidate should be attentive to detail and have the proven ability to work with diverse groups. The Executive Director working in our NW Washington office will report to the Chairs of The Peace Alliance Board and Peace Alliance Educational Institute.

Essential Competencies:

  • Proven success in fundraising, building relationships and cultivating supporters
  • Proven successful leadership and management experience of staff and consultants both local and remote
  • Tech savvy and able to work independently of administrative support
  • Excellent public speaking, presentation and writing skills
  • Financial management and budgetary experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills that inspire trust and loyalty
  • Background in public policy, government, peacebuilding, advocacy and/or related fields

Contact and relationships with Hill staff, academics and public policy leaders, in the areas of our organizational focus as well as grassroots organizing experience are a plus.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Development

  • Drive the fundraising efforts of the organization, working closely with the Development Director to develop and implement a strategy for fundraising in coordination with the Board
  • Develop and maintain major donor and grantor relationships

Personnel Management

  • Lead and continue to develop talented staff and consultants to deliver on the organization’s mission
  • Manage staff responsibilities, work levels, and goals

Programs and Services: Advocacy, Education, and Alliances

  • Proven success creating and implementing self-sustaining programs that deliver on the organization’s mission
  • Support and expand grassroots network with Field Staff
  • Collaborate on communications, technology and marketing with Communications Director
  • Oversee federal lobbying activities with Legislative Director

Financial Management

  • Responsible for all organization finances, with staff support, including sources of revenue, expenditures, production of financial statements and the establishment of operating reserves
  • Prepare draft annual operating budgets, and finalize budgets with Board approval
  • Ensure all appropriate regulatory requirements for the organization are met

Board Responsibilities

  • Help develop and implement strategic goals in conjunction with the Board
  • Maintain regular communications with the Board Chairs and the Board of Directors
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting to the Board regarding finances, development, staff, goals
  • Participate in regular Board meetings

Minimum 8 years executive level experience.

This is a part time or full time position. Salary dependent on experience and fit with our organization’s mission.
