The People’s Coalition for Safety & Freedom is seeking a National Coordinator, who can help lead and support the design, development, and implementation of a People’s Process, an unprecedented effort to democratize policy making by engaging in a community process to collectively write federal legislation that redefines safety and invests in our communities. Through the People’s Process, communities, and impacted peoples in particular, will determine their priorities, budgets, and policies that will replace the 1994 Crime Bill and address the crisis of criminalization and incarceration. The People’s Process will include town halls, surveys of community members, teach-ins, research on behalf of community organizations, community driven drafts and reviews of legislation, and people’s movement assemblies.
The National Coordinator is a 12 month full-time position, and will be housed at the National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls. Among the responsibilities, the National Coordinator will:
- Coordinate the People’s Process working group, a key part of the People’s Coalition for Safety & Freedom Campaign infrastructure
- Serve in a lead role to plan and implement the People’s Process, including designing a first of its kind national participatory policy-making effort
- Coordinator PCSF working groups to support People’s Process strategy
- Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to local grassroots organizations engaged in the People’s Process
- Develop and curate political education materials deeply rooted in decriminalization and decarceration, and addresses the critical need to transform our current in-crisis criminal legal system
Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong background (preference of at least three to four years) in training, organizing, coordination, and facilitation;
- Strong coordination, research, and writing skills
- Experience working with communities and people impacted by mass criminalization and incarceration;
- People directly impacted by mass criminalization and mass incarceration, including formerly incarcerated people, are encouraged to apply
- Strong relationship with movement organizations;
- Familiarity with participatory processes (examples may include hosting town halls, implementing surveys, to facilitating People’s Movement Assemblies);
- A political commitment to decarceration and creating a space for Black queer feminist work and leaders;
- A plus, but not necessary: policy writing and advocacy experience

- Minimum base salary is $60,000- actual salary may vary with experience
- Though the position is presently 12 months, the Coalition expects to fundraise additional funds to extend the length of the position
