Position Announcement – Mid-August, 2020 to May, 2021, Part-Time.

George Washington University (GWU)’s Black Students Union (BSU), Honey W. Nashman Center for Civil Engagement and Public Service, and the Department of Sociology are facilitating a student-centered research project to address policing in Washington DC, with a particular focus on youth diversion and positive youth development. This initiative was begun by the BSU in a response to the murder by police of George Floyd and other Black people.

To that end, we are seeking applications for a Nashman Fellow to provide faculty leadership to teach a course and help to coordinate the research for this endeavor. This is a part-time position; we prefer a candidate with a Ph.D. but will consider advanced doctoral students. A part-time graduate assistant will be provided to work with the Nashman Fellow and the undergraduate students. Numerous faculty members will be available for advice and consultation, including possible guest lectures. Engagement with community partners, including nonprofit and governmental agencies, is expected.

We are looking for someone who has as many of the following skills and knowledge backgrounds as possible:

–       Broad set of research skills and approaches (qualitative and quantitative methods, appreciation of historical context and shaping);

–       Subject matter knowledge of policing and/or youth development and/or juvenile justice (especially prevention and diversion) and/or DC policing/justice history;

–       Uses race and class analysis;

–       Highly organized and able to lead a multi-strand research project and get preliminary results in one semester;

–       Focus on policy solutions, not just problem analysis;

–       Can lead and/or participate in a working group composed of students, faculty, and community residents on these issues;

–       Collaborative with peers and students, is willing and able to work with students in a mutual and flexible manner, guiding and supporting student-led inquiry, and enjoys teaching undergraduates;

–       Able to work in person and online as required given covid-19 realities.
