The People’s Coalition for Safety & Freedom is seeking a National Campaign Coordinator to organize and facilitate a campaign to replace the 1994 Crime Bill with a new bill that heals and addresses the crisis of criminalization and incarceration. The National Campaign Coordinator will work with dozens of groups across the country to fine tune and ultimately implement a campaign plan, finalize and cultivate a functioning national structure that supports the campaign and coordinate a nationwide public launch of the campaign.

The National Campaign Coordinator is a 12-month full-time position and will report to a  Steering Committee member (to be determined prior to any official hire) of a new national coalition—the People’s Coalition for Safety & Freedom. Steering Committee members include Black Alliance for Just Immigration, Black Youth Project 100, Center for Popular Democracy, Dream Defenders, Just Leadership USA, Law 4 Black Lives, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, and PolicyLink.

Among other tasks and duties, the National Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Coordinate the Steering Committee and Advisory Board of the People’s Coalition for Safety & Freedom. This will include facilitating and planning regular calls with the Steering Committee and/or Advisory Board, ensuring that work within the Steering Committee and Advisory Board is moving and completed on deadline, and planning and facilitating in-person meetings, and ensuring consistent engagement between calls/meetings, including gathering feedback and confirming votes/decisions.
  • Help develop and implement a campaign plan.
  • Help plan and execute a public launch of the campaign.
  • Act as the primary contact of the  campaign.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong background (at least three years preferred) in training, organizing, and facilitation;
  • Experience working with communities and people impacted by mass criminalization and incarceration; (People directly impacted by mass criminalization and mass incarceration, including formerly incarcerated people, are encouraged to apply);
  • Strong relationship with a broad array of community members and movement groups;
  • A political commitment to decarceration and creating a space for Black queer feminist work and leaders;
  • A plus, but not necessary: policy writing and advocacy experience;
  • Experience managing a campaign from start to finish;
  • Detail-oriented and accountable; Experience and love for coordination and strong commitment to follow-up;
  • Experience with communications, traditional, and social media;
  • Able to help facilitate and support strategy creation
  • Experience in racial-justice coalition spaces.

  • The position will likely involve significant travel (potentially multiple times a month)
  • Though the position’s term is 12 months, the Coalition aims to fundraise additional funds to extend the length of the position
  • Position can be remote
