“A Fair Fight: Achieveing Indigent Defense Resource Parity” highlights how many of the issues that affect our criminal justice system today — overly long sentences, racial bias, wrongful convictions — are exacerbated by overwhelmed indigent defense systems. Solutions outlined in the paper range from funding state-level indigent defense from general revenue, to setting state-specific workload standards, to passing federal legislation to supplement public defense costs. The paper also examines how probation and parole reform and requiring prosecutor offices to adopt open discovery rules could contribute to increased equity in our criminal justice system.
