SUD Treatment Strategies for Ethnic Populations: Outcomes, Benefits and Success
June 19, 2019 @ 6:00 am - 7:30 am EDT

Treatment Communities of America, in cooperation with
the Congressional Black Caucus, invites you to a briefing:
SUD Treatment Strategies for Ethnic Populations:

Outcomes, Benefits and Success
Wednesday, June 19, 2019
10:00am to 11:30pm

2103 Rayburn House Office Building

Please join us for a briefing on the barriers facing those in need of treatment for Substance Use
Disorders (SUD), specifically addressing and raising awareness about disparities among racial
and ethnic minority populations.

Racial and ethnic minorities often have high rates of addictive disorders, but lower rates of
treatment seeking and completion than the overall population. A significant barrier to treatment
is the lack of culturally relevant and appropriate treatment. Research indicates that culturally
competent treatment practices including providing therapy and materials in the client’s
language, knowledge, understanding and appreciation for cultural perspectives and nuances,
involving the wider family and community and training therapists can enhance client
engagement, retention and treatment outcomes for substance use disorder.

We hope you will join us for a panel discussion that will examine facts and statistics about
opioid misuse and mortality, evaluate the gaps that exist among racial and ethnic minority
populations in accessing effective evidence-based treatment, and explain more about culturally
competent SUD treatment strategies that work.

Speakers will include:
Emory Cabrera – Executive Director of Clinical Services, Integrity House, Newark, NJ
Dave Mineta – President and CEO, Momentum for Mental Health, Santa Clara, CA
Najiy Shabazz – Counselor and person in recovery, Regional Addiction Prevention,W ashington DC• Office of Minority Health, Department of Health and Human Services (invited)
