Book Talk featuring Rachel Barkow, author of Prisoners of Politics: Breaking the Cycle of Mass Incarceration. Rachel Elise Barkow is the Segal Family Professor of Regulatory Law and Policy and Faculty Director, Center on the Administration of Criminal Law at NYU. She was a Member of the United States Sentencing Commission from 2013-Jan. 2019. In her book she argues that reform guided by evidence, not politics and emotions, will reduce crime and reverse mass incarceration. She explains how dangerous it is to base criminal justice policy on the whims of the electorate. Instead, she argues for an institutional shift toward data and expertise.
Joining Rachel as panelists:
Roger Fairfax, Jr., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Professor of Law, and Founding Director of the George Washington Law School Criminal Law Initiative. He previously served as a federal prosecutor in the Public Integrity Section of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Shon Hopwood, Associate Professor at Georgetown University Law School with an unusual legal journey prior to attending law school. Convicted of bank robberies and sentenced to 12 years in prison, he became a jailhouse lawyer having two petitions he prepared accepted by the Supreme Court.
