“According to government statistics, the number of reported sexual assaults in these facilities tripled between 2011 and 2014—a sign that either more people are speaking out and/or government agencies are taking the issue more seriously. However, only a small percentage of these attacks are corroborated.”

“The perpetrators of sexual abuse are both inmates and staff—with the latter representing the very people sworn to protect inmates. At this crucial moment, incarcerated survivors are trying to speak out with the hope that the #MeToo movement will help bring these oft-forgotten horror stories to the fore.”
