“Earlier this month, Marielle Franco, a strident defender of Rio de Janeiro’s marginalized communities, and one of the few black and female politicians in Brazil, was murdered. It was a tragic end to an inspiring career. Franco came from one of Rio’s largest favelas, and in 2016 she launched an “outsider” campaign that took her all the way to the city’s municipal chamber. She was a fearless critic of police brutality and racial profiling, and she was a tireless campaigner for the empowerment of black women. Franco’s murderers remain at large, but the global expression of solidarity which followed news of her death has already revealed their failure. Marielle may be gone, but her example, and the vision of the future for which she fought, are here to stay.”
