Cindy Shank, mother of three, was serving a 15-year sentence in federal prison on conspiracy charges related to drug crimes committed by her deceased ex-boyfriend years earlier. Cindy’s brother, Rudy Valdez’s method of coming with the incarceration was to film his sister’s family for her, both the everyday details and the milestones. His intimate portrait of mandatory minimum drug sentencing’s devastating consequences, follows her and her family over the course of ten years. The film also details his family’s fight to win her release during the last months of the Obama administration’s clemency initiative. First time director Rudy Valdez tells how the documentary was born out of necessity in this interview at Sundance. The documentary will air on HBO.
