DRAFT AGENDA:
“The Role of Data Collection in Law Enforcement Accountability and Community Trust”
Walter E. Washington Convention Center
Room 145A
Washington, DC
ARRIVAL – Program to begin promptly at 10:00AM
·         Congresswoman Jackson Lee Opening Remarks and Introductions (10-15 minutes)
Forum Objective:
As our nation moves into a state of heightened momentum and awareness to expose, discuss and take action to stem the tide of violence against minority communities and law enforcement officers, it is important to not only identify critical problem areas within communities and law enforcement agencies, but to implement comprehensive solutions and demonstrated examples of best practices. From policing strategies, behaviors, and overall results of reducing or influencing crime and violence, what have we learned about the role and efforts of data collection within local law enforcement agencies, the federal government, and the community? What can we learn about new and innovative initiatives? What are the challenges and successes of collecting data? What are the social, legal and policy implications? How do we address standardization, enforcement, and transparency? This forum discussion will attempt to answer these questions by providing a thoughtful exchange and engaging dialogue about what role data collection plays in strengthening or weakening systems of transparency, accountability and public safety within law enforcement agencies, and building or breaking bonds of trust and peace within minority communities.
