October 14, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am EDT

Justice Roundtable Conversations on Justice will be held Friday, October 14, at 12 p.m with an event  titled: Moving Beyond the Offense: Rethinking Punishment for Violent Crime, and Learning Lessons from Maryland’s Unger Cases.

The discussion will focus on a recently released report by the Justice Policy Institute, called Defining Violence: reducing incarceration by rethinking America’s approach to violence, and the Unger appellate case in Maryland, which resulted in over 150 individuals who had been serving long sentences (including life) for violent offenses, being released from prison over the past several years.  It is important to note that none of the individuals released has been rearrested for a violent offense.  You can learn more about the Unger cases via a story in The Washington Post, about Stanley Mitchell (who will be one of the panelists on October 14) and/or by listening to an NPR story on the cases.
